Ive just bought a phase 1 Rallye with a 145bhp VTS engine in it.

The best part has been tinkering myself if Im honest, Ive put a cage in, seats, harnesses, bilsteins etc

Im going to finish it tomorrow so Ill get some pics up!

Cheers for the replies guys,

The way I'm looking at it now is 3 choices,

- Clio Ph1/2
- Puma
- 106 GTi

There's pro's and con's to all of them...but I see them as the projects I'd WANT to do In order too haha

I dont fancy a Honda for some reason, and I want to stay away from Vauxhalls, as they're the only car make I've had in 5 cars, and I still have one as my Daily anyways

The advice on doing brakes and sus first is good, and something that Ian advised me before too. Any of those 3 will be fast enough weighing under a ton anyways! but then obviously move onto engine mods after all the other stuff is done.

What experiences have people had wit those 3?

I see a few have had 106 Gti's as track cars, how did you rate them? Easy to work with too?

I know a few people rate the Pumas (coughiancough haha), but what are other peoples opinions on them? Anyone drove them round a track?
(not that I don't believe you Ian, just after some more opinions )

Now, I know Clios are superb round the bends and probably the most powerful standard and modified...But has anyone worked on one? They lend themselves well to being worked on and tweaked? Has anyone drove a powerful, Lightweight one to say what they are like?

Sorry for the 6million questions, but as I've said, I'm not rushing this and want to build something decent for myself

i had a ph1 172 for a while. absolutely loved it and still regret selling it now. i'd buy or am thinking of buying another one.

repairs wise, theyre easy enough. had the engine out of mine twice and changed a gearbox. bought the car with a slipped timing belt.

only thing i didnt do myself was the timing belt. at the time i didnt want to risk it.

such fun/cheap cars. and i dont care what anyone says, theyre reliable same as any other car if you look after it with oil changes ect.

do the usual; matched inlets, filter and exhaust combined with a map and your laughing

A 182 with cams and a map will see 190bhp

Wouldnt say any of the above pull like trains. Vtec is pretty cool but the lack of torque in most hot hatchbacks without forced induction is shit.

I've had a Clio 182 and 106 GTi. Both went on track.

Clio was rr'd @167 BHP
106 was rr'd @142 BHP

I'd have said power to weight was bang on even. 106 kept up with a 182 and 197 on track.

Both handled really well, Clio was on Michelin PE2's and 106 was on Toyo Proxes.

Which would I prefer as a track car? Probably the Clio to be honest.

To work on? 106, parts are dirt cheap, I.e smash a gearbox on a Clio, your probably looking £200+. Where as a 106 your more around £50-£100.

How come your clio was so underpowered?

Yeah I have noticed that with parts, don't know why though, as would never have said one wa shifter quality than the other :-/

they dont make 182 bhp its marketting bullshit, read stories that the 182 comes from the engine on a bench dyno anyway

If it is JUST for the track, then get a 172 and do some bits to it.
If its going to to be your daily car too, then 182/Civic

Oh and you will be seriously lucky to find an un modded 182 running 182bhp.

Few mods though and you can get it back up to that with a re-map and matched inlets

I disagree. Plus spending more on the car generally means its newer and gives you a much bigger element of reliability. Something that IMO is vital. Because I haven't got the money to fix it. What if someone understeers into your car, or doesn't see you? I don't drive with insurance on track, and I'm not sure if the OP will.

I've never broken a car, or crashed/spun on track. So I always drive within my limits.

I disagree. Because its newer dosn't mean it will be more reliable. After all you are driving it alot harder than what it was intended for and putting alot more strain on the vital components.

I would say a car worth 2k with some money spent on upgrading the parts most likely to fail will be more reliable than a 7k car thats good out the box.

Half the fun would be building it up with better parts, rather than just buying something expensive and jumping straight on track.

When mine gets a lambda sensor, it should be approx 165bhp, and Im just under 1000kgs with out driver now. It would be nice to be a tiny bit quicker in a straight line to aid getting ponces in their Clio 200s out the way, but its fine really.


Also with Clios, the standard figure is a engine on a dyno with no auxiliaries

Just a thing with the clio's. Rare to see one make the figures.

182 usually make between 165-175.
