A few hundred is not equal to a few k.

I wouldn't bother with a x5 personally, they seem terrible.

Seriously, gearbox problems are COMMON on them, I would stay away from them unless you really feel you want to spend £3k-£4k at some point on a re con box.

The fact that it was a pretty expensive car to begin with and yet has something like a common gear box fault would kind of say to me it's a bit of a tossers car

Not really sure where I stand in the more expensive car = more expensive repairs, I could understand on something like a Ferrari that's highly engineer with attention to detail but a x5, just seems like a normal car to me - A lot of the cost of German cars seems to be down to peoples image, the badge and a love for Angela Merkel - Just talking random rubbish, no need to take things so serious, I know Bmw drivers are pretty serious people

Are the X5 gearboxes bespoke then? are they not 5 series boxes?

Just re read that and think I missed the gist the first time.

On a 10k car I would expect even expensive repairs to cost a few hundred quid max yes.

the mother in laws makes a big clunk when slowing down to nearly a stop. I dont think they have noticed though so dont wanna upset them

I googled it and it seemed to be quiet common and often needed a new box (i cant remember the fault now).

John, that logic doesn't make any sense.

And Sunz as usual.

Sorry I can't live up to your awesomely informative post regulations Jambo.

You have added bugger all to the topic and yet question other peoples posts without even giving any insight.

You do come across as a bit of a snobby twat.

Yes, its a car designed by tossers for tossers tbh.

That's why gearboxes break. Proven fact.

Is a shame you're unable to read smiley's.

I don't see why you need to originally put my name in your post to make it personal anyway.

If you don't agree then fine, but at least try and understand " "

I just came here to post something that was truthful about x5's about how common the gear box problems are on them, which is the idea of the topic.

I think my last comment about the seriousness of Bmw drivers was proven in your reaction.

Thanks for the replies. Decided not to get one, mainly down to the age of them and gearbox problems etc. And trying to find one that was in good condition with decent warranty etc was hard. The Missis found it a bit on a large side too as she's only small

So I went to my local BMW dealership and bought a 2007 X3 MSport instead. Picking it up next Wednesday hopefully.

They are growing on me. One of my sisters clients owns an Msport one with black wheels. Looks lovely.

Small to you is 6 foot though Jay

X3's are nice, but can't help but think they're missing something

the x3's look a bit weird to me. it's like they've just squashed an x5 but forgot to put everything in proportion.

although i recently saw one the same as jambo's talking about (in white with black wheels) and it looked pretty good.

Yeah they're a bit marmite but I think the M Sport ones look a lot better than the standard version. My one has got a few extras too like media pack with sat nav, half leather, xenons, privacy glass and metallic paint. The wife will drive it mainly and she loves it.

She's only 5'4", so 1'4" shorter than me!
