Whats the reason they cant be rebuilt, dont stock individual parts and engines come as a whole?
Was a good read, something you dont see often done as not much r8 project threads going about.
Also reminds me of a previous thread on here about mechanics / techs dispute and how nowadays all they do is plug in a diagnostics machine and dont know sod all

very similar to what i had, hope you dont mind me putting a pic..
in most cases rebuild is a no because its quite hard to tell really whats caused it and very time consuming, so its cheaper to get a rebuilt engine.

The old engine will probably be sent back to Audi to be turned back into a new engine. The new engine will probably be built from old engines.

It won't be rebuilt mainly due to the coating on the bores. I'm not sure where you would even get the bores coated after machining. And Audi don't list oversized parts for the engine, pretty much for the above reason. Even if we could have the bores coated we probably wouldn't as we have to guarantee our work for two years and leaving something so critical to an outside source would be far to risky.

That's not good for a handful of miles!!
Not sure how manufacturers get it so wrong - we are replacing pistons and conrods on 2.0 tfsi's at the moment because they screwed up the tolerances when they designed them!

Isnt there a problem with oil consumption on the engines in the new fabia vrs / seat ibiza range and polos, 1.4 twin charged and their replacing the rings?

I have seen one A1 Twin charged with problems, but we were told by technical support to renew the engine! - we seem to see more A5 2.0 TFSI's with issues

Does the R8 engine suffer from bad carbon build up like the RS4 does???

Eck - most of them dont rack up the mileage so its difficult to say if they suffer to the same degree - This particular one seemed rather coked up but it was difficult to see how bad through all the oil thats been blown back through the inlet

What do you think of 3 litre Diesel engines mate?

Good engine - not huge amounts go wrong with the current ones - only real problems we see are coolant leaks and aux belt issues such as siezed rollers
The earlier engines however do suffer with problems with the EGR cooler and is ££ to sort.

New engines sat in a crate at work - no ones owned up to paying for it yet - as far as im aware the current standing is audi will contribute 70% towards the repair but the customer is quite rightly still not happy with that

What did you say the cost was, 20k? So that's still 6k? I'm not surprised he's not happy. The fact that they are willing to pay over 50% shows they must feel they are partly responsible

I estimated £20k - i think i had the proper estimate on my box yesterday - the final bill (total) is just a shade under £15k
But still leaves alot for the customer to fork out. Normally Audi have been fantastic with contributions - but of late we have felt on ouR end that they must be under pressure to save money (Warranty claims are being heavily scrutinsed and rejected where ever possible for the daftest of reasons etc)
I can totally see the customers point of view - it doesnt matter if its a little A1 or an R8 - you'd expect the engine to last longer that 80k

Definetly! And it's not even old. I'm sure if he took it further, media etc, it wouldn't look good on Audi that one of their flagship cars can't do over 80k miles

A little progress today - was asked my managment to start with the rebuild - even though we still dont know whos paying (not the best of ideas in my books but hey ho)
What £8.5K buys you...
Side by side (old ones partially stripped)
Not really massive amounts to these - but taking into consideration i took most of it apart over a month ago... there was a little bit of head scratching
Tiny twin plate clutch and a very light and small flywheel
Near enough back together
Tommorow should be all together - all is left if the alternator to finish - i didnt have new seals for the coolant pipes going into it. Refit the mount that side and loom then into the car.
Half day tommorow so as long as the engines bolted in i will be happy
