When I worked at DHL, for month end I would normally start working from 8am > 1am the following day, go home and then come back again for 8am 
I did get some time off in lieu though to use whenever I wanted.

Been working away from home, plant went down, went on the piss in chester, 2am get a call saying 5am start, get back to hotel at 3am, shower, change, drive van to work for 4.30, plant down, sleep in back of van til 4pm, start nightshift as plant running, get paid from 2am.

Try doing 8-4 at work, 4:30-8ish, stop for some indian food from the restaurant next door, 9-6am, drive to work, shower in the changing rooms, at your desk for 8 again for another 8-4. Then moan
