It's about being individual.

I'm sure somewhere along the lines John you have changed something to suit it your way.

I like it, looks smart.

Nope. I bought mine because I prefer using the Mac operating system to windows and I used them everyday at uni. It had the spec I needed, don't need to hack into the matrix everyday. Also I'd like to know a laptop I couldve bought that 6 years down the line works as well as It did when I bought it with very little looking after. Trouble free computing, perfect for me as I have better things to be doing than taking it to a shop everyweek because I've got another virus from youporn.

My MBP looks nothing special at all imo, plain as fuck.

Clearly rob hasn't bought it for what it looks like as he's covered it in 3M CF

Got a feeling john saw a Mac, then saw fake CF and shit himself with excitement at the chance to put someone down.

Cheers for all the mostly positive comments!

If anyone's interested, it's a refurbished 2011 13" MacBook Air, Core i7 1.8ghz, 256gb SSD and 8Gb RAM (the RAM was an unexpected bonus - was only expecting 4Gb) - paid $1199, which works out at roughly £764. I don't think you can get a better thin and light laptop for that kind of money.

Bought to replace my perfectly good 6 year old white Macbook, simply because it's so much cheaper over here with the exchange rates and not sure when I'll be over this way again. Won't be in the near future. I wouldn't spend £2k on a computer - that's madness.

Carbon wrapped it to minimise scuffs and scratches as I travel a lot (my white one is truly fucked appearance-wise, even though it's always been kept in a neoprene case when not in use), and also so I don't look like every other motherfucker in Starbucks should I need to use my laptop while drinking expensive coffee for any reason in the future.

Na mate, you've ruined it. Fail.

May as well just chuck it in the bin now.

Come on Sam, there's no proof that OSX is more stable than Windows 7. Both OS's have their fair share of problems.....

I use (mostly) the same apps on both platforms and they perform better (and quicker) on OS X.

I can run Windows apps in OS X under a virtual box whereas I can't vice-versa on Windows (not without significant hacking)

I don't have to spend money on AV products for OS X whereas I do for Windows.

I'm not saying OS X is perfect and has no problems whatsoever - what I am saying is that in terms of productivity I can get more things done quicker on my MBP than a Windows machine with similar spec as I don't have to worry about the extra problems Windows brings.

OS X by logic is typically more stable due to the nature it has such a small hardware portfolio to support. Note 'typically' is the key word. There is nothing you say you can't have a windows box that is stable as hell.

Personally i would not use the AV argument for the Mac. You only have to look at the problems recently to see that you really should be running an AV even on mac as they are just as insecure as anything else (in fact many would argue less secure going on the hack competitions where its normally first to fall but real hackers don't really bother due to the small user base)

The Mac Air is a great bit of kit. Yet to see a real windows alternative in the form factor. They all seem to be really struggling to be able to make it even for the same price as the Apple. The Samsung 9 got close but the 2012 refresh only just got it up close to the 2011 Air and is now much worse than the 2012 Air spec wise (and its the same money)

My experience of using Macs since OS9 vastly differs unless the app is OSX specific....

Virtualbox + OSX CD/Image = OSX VM in 5mins (no hacking required)

Don't need to run AV on windows nor do you need to pay for one if you do. And you don't need to pay for AV on OSX either, use ClamAV (which considering the recent issues i'd be running).

Having used both OS's in high-load (ie: recording + streaming 60+ tracks @24/192K audio in real-time and lighting up all cores with heavy plugins) situations i can happily say both equally suffer from issues.
Only difference i've noticed is with Protools which is better optimised (can usually squeeze out a few extra tracks or an extra plugin on similar spec hardware) under OSX than it is on Windows.

And i'm not saying OSX is cack in anyway but it isn't the holygrail that everyone makes it out to be when you decide to use it for proper work rather than the typical Starbucks Facebook surfing.

Rob - Usual culprit for Windows is dodgy 3rd-party drivers rather than the actual OS. From my experience with OSX, it tends to be buggy apps or buggy OS.

Anyway, enough of me derailing.....

Well Dom you can compare both operating systems as much as you like and you are obviously entitled to your opinion as much as the next man, but I still personally think Windows is shit in comparison.

I decided to make the switch last year to OSX for my work computer.

Now i would say that sometimes I can't work as fast as i could on OSX as i could on windows , but I can say that in 8 months I have had no issues, no faults no software crashes, no issue in finding drivers or anything like that.

horses for corses, i work on OSX all day, and when at home I have the choice of OS's and use both.

But i've never seen any tests or proof that suggests one OS is more stable than the other, it's all opinions. But as you say, you're entitled to your opinion and i can't argue with that

You have an IT company Sam, you should know that you firstly don't need AV and secondly that most stuff does just work.

I know macs get virus's Willay, I've also seen loads of research that shows it's just as if not more open to vulnerabilities as windows, it's still a lot of security buy obscurity.

I meant windows, don't need av on windows.

As you say, plenty of articles (quick Google FU - HERE, HERE, HERE) about that state OSX having more vulnerabilities than Windows (and other OS's). But a lot of it is down to the mindset of Apple and it's users - Users thinking their Macs are invincible, Apple for being sloppy on getting security patches out.

Either way, this is for another thread entirely

Please show research on it being as open as windows, I'd love to have a look at that.

All I'll say is, 6 years and all the DannyB websites under the sun and not one virus or anything. Not only that it still runs well and I haven't replaced a single part on it.

For me, the non geek, thats good trouble free computing.

The only thing wrong with it is it looks battered with just normal everyday use. Wish I'd put a sticker on it
