There's no way this is happening this year. Last year there would of been a good chance of him leaving when he next won the title and on a high thinking it would take a few years. But seen as it has just happened and united have arguably got the strongest squad in a long time the future is bright so I think Fergie wants to stay a bit longer knowing there's a chance to win more (and hopefully a shot at the CL).

I also agree that whoever comes in, even people as high as mourinho, that they will work with/under Fergie for a year. Even after that I can't see him leaving the club, he will always have a say in things.

As for who the next manager is, if this story is true then Jose is a certainty for it. He is probs the most likely guy to come in, but going to Chelsea first isn't going to help IMO. Other than him I've no idea who can succeed. Moyes is not the answer! It is definetly going to be a decline for a good few years whoever comes in, the longer Fergie stays the better!

Might not happen now but when it does it will be the biggest managerial appointment in football history. Poisoned chalice if you ask me, no fucker will match what he did. Youre on a hiding to nowhere.

Be interesting to see if fans have the patience or if they will be calling for the new guys head in 6 months though.

Whoever takes over will be a patsy for the real manager a year down the line.

Definitely seems to be happening though, its all over the place this morning, there's no smoke without fire...

I think they may go a bit left field and go for Klopp or someone like that. Who knows, apparently it should get announced at the NY stock exchange at 230ish today if happening (according to moose on twitter)

I don't think he'll be retiring yet. And I hope it's not David Moyes if he is. Just because he's Scottish and angry doesn't mean he'll be any good.

Moyes has put together a great team without much money. His big spend is currently wanted by the likes of RM so he can't be too bad with cash either

Didn't Fergie threaten to retire when he was 60 or 65 and the team played shite for the rest of the season. He then decided to stay and they had an epic year the following year.

Difficult shoes to fill if anything. Not a massive football fan but I think they'll recruit within the squad or something. Doubt they'll go high profile foreigner.

I'd be very surprised if any manager of a half decent team would step down and become assistant manager. Its pretty insulting to Moyes to think he would

I do get that argument. But what's his biggest spent? £15m? That's around the value of a squad player at United. And he's not exactly experienced in the Champions League. The quality of players needed to win the Premier League and Champions League is on another level entirely to what he's used to.
