Not better as such, just one that suits the bill better.

There is no point getting a runabout to change the gearbox in the 5 series.

But why would I sell my car if I don't want to? The 5 suits me to the t. 500-600 miles a week no bother, comfortable, plenty of power and does 40 mpg. I plan to change jobs in next year to something closer and won't be doing as many miles anyway.

Basically, I am not going to sell the 5. No ones opinion will change that.

And also, the gearbox change might take me 2-3 months as it's a one off.
I want to strip engine under side and under seal
and some more bits.

So lets look at the figures,

£500-1000 for another car
£3-500 to insure it
£200 to tax it
£400 a year to service
£50 MOT

Total £1450-2150.

Cost of fuel in BMW @40mpg £4387
Cost of fuel in 2nd car @50mpg £3510
Savings £877

So in the first year it will cost you an extra £573-1273, 2nd year it will cost an extra £73-273.

Do you have a missus/boyfriend? How about they drive the BMW if you want to keep it so much and then you have the slightly more eco car

2 or 3 oil changes, plus other filters and general bits that need doing makes it up to £400.

What is the tax rate on pre 2001 cars?

Don't mean to sound a cunt but even with 3 oil changes in a year, you are still no where near £400 on something such as a Fiesta or Corsa C you are running on the cheap.

I probably spend around £250 a year on the 308. That's on 17" low profile rubber and big brakes. I will admit I push the tyres to the legal limit, do 15k on oil and the front discs have done more than 50k. I have new discs to put on but why change something that is perfectly safe and legal?

We are talking about £500-1000 cars, they will need stuff changed on them. Brakes all round on most cars are min of £100.

Also it is easily £400 if he isn't doing it himself

I do all work myself.

In you calculations, you didn't include servicing BMW which is 80 quid doing myself.

The cars I mentioned in first post are 120-150 to tax for a year.

Mine is 150 for 6 months.

Parts, tyres etc will be loads cheaper anyway. And there is plenty of those cars in scrapyards where I can get bits for next to nothing where as there is not many BMW

Maybe it's me but I have never understood people's enthusiasm with mundane cars and especially throwing money at them! But, for the cost of a run around, a reputable specialist would probably be able to fit the box and you'd have dome comeback if there were a problem!,

Friend has a 1.4 hdi 206. Never had any problems, just wear and tear. £30 a year tax aswell!

I didn't include the BMW as you said the other car is a 2nd car, hence costs on top of what you already pay

Don't see the appeal of making it manual either.

Get a 530i with the gearbox fitted, use that as your toy and get a piece of shit to kick about in if you are that bothered.

Or just get a 3series manual 330 or something. Will be lighter and more nimble than the 5.

Or just keep the 5, don't change the gearbox and save the cash for a rainy day or a newer car
