Go to a foreign country you should respect it. Bit like people who complain for being arrested for drinking alcohol in public in dubai - Thats their rules. If you want to visit you abide by them.
Its obviously a sacred mountain and I am sure they will have known that from the locals so a fairly stupid stunt to pull.

It boils down to respect, or disrespect in this case - the guide told them the mountain was sacred in their culture and they shouldn't do it, they told him to "fuck off" and did it anyway.

I just don't understand people getting upset by it.

People love getting worked up about somthing, even though they don't have the same beliefs as these so called people they still have to see it from their point of view all the time.
