One from the way home. Had to work a bit harder due to the wind and went a bit further. Still not really sure what it means.

Most of your ride is in the aerobic AKA cardio zone which, IIRC, is good for weight control. When you start getting above the 150bpm-ish range you are into the anaerobic zone which is where you build the endurance you speak of.

your max heart rate should be 180 - your age
as long as you are not constantly in that range you'll be fine

It's 220 minus your age, but it's not the most accurate way of figuring it out. There are several methods out there, I used several recently to figure mine out and just averaged the results.

probably need to try and work a bit harder then. personally I think I have a good level of endurance. Can run or cycle long distances and keep on going. I would like to be fitter so if I get the heart rate up, that shall sort that.

I don't whether your routes suit it but, interval training is useful. Switch between aerobic and anaerobic zones. It's a good way to build fitness without knackering yourself and having to stop with your heart beating out your chest.

It's mostly just a ride from one end of a town centre to the other. On the way back I tend to go a few miles further.

On weekends I'm away on the mountain bike so work pretty hard up huge hills there. That's where the endurance for regular cycling comes from really.

Increased heart rate is because you are excited about getting a sausage roll

This mornings cycle was very similar to yeatersay in terms of heart rate. I am guessing that's a good thing.

If you suss out you max heart rate the right way (you may well puke doing so) you can work out you zones better.
My max if I did 220 minus age should be 177 but it is/was 186.

Looks pretty normal to me for a regular cyclist...As you know Nick I do a bit of cycling - and im also big boned!
My resting heart rate averages out at about 46 - which is pretty low (but not unusual for road cyclists)
My general low effort cycling is done around 90-120bpm.... on a fast flat solo ride (say 20miles in an hour) I average about 145-160. Its actually more difficult to get my heart rate over 170 these days as I have a good base of endurance work behind me.
Having said that, going up Wrynose Pass last year on coast to coast in a day I had to stop when my heart rate monitor was showing 215!
My resting heart rate has dropped 35bpm since I quit smoking.
I recently had a fitness assessment done which turned out some weird results- I am in the high end of obese on their BMI measurements - yet my VO2 max and thresholds are in the "endurance athlete" bracket. The guy who did it gave me some dirty looks when my BMI came in at 34.7 (I have lost a stone and a half since then) but then my functional threshold test destroyed his own levels...and he was a footballer at semi pro level..he was confused to say the least until I explained the kind of cycle events I do.
Just goes to show that cycling is very good for you.

Managed a peak of 166 on the way home. Need to try it up a big hill on the mountain bike I think.

Interesting you made this thread actually. I get around 65 which is okay I think... whereas my girlfriend gets around 80; she was kind of worried about that! She is quite regularly stressed though (at work etc.)
Her dad is 56 and had a heart rate around 50... crazy fit.
