oh yea, do u know if this VTEC concept / idea is patented(sp?)??

can other manufactures adopt the same idea?

cos i often wondered why no one else has taken this idea, as it is a really effective design

ok high cam and low cam.. when vtec kicks in it engages the high rpm lobes to work there for allowing the low rpm lobes to run as high rpm. look at link thats been posted.

there is also Mivec.. which is similar thing.. from mitsubishi I believe.

What is a V8? Is it the way the engine is laid out etc, what is the difference between a normal engine and a V8?

1) Variable valve timing - there are various systems utilised by different manufacturers, but the basic jist is that valve lift and/or duration of opening time are increased at higher revs to allow more fuel/air mixture in to the combustion chamber to promote even higher revving and greater power and torque production.

SVM - well pointed about the vtec its what i was going to put

all these people that say thats when the 2nd cam comes in, or it comes on cam, or the ecotech kicks in

its all bollox

cars runs 16 valves and the 2 camshafts all the time

the reason why in say a corsa at 4.5k revs it feels a bit faster or sounds louder is that everything is running at optimim performance
so the air/fuel mixture is right etc

It's just the profile of the cam init, but something to do with oil pressure

VTEC does not use two camshafts

It uses actuators that engage at a given rev range and make the cam have a high lift profile

In effect the inlet is open for longer thus gives more power

I had a video of it somewhere

I have a 4th gen jap import Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC and it's sooooo good. Easily the best car i've driven.
