thats understandable considering 5th is an overrun gear, top speed is achieved in 4th on the 60bhp
was bout too say cos mine does loads more in 5th than 4th, must be cos of the torque.

well i wouldnt hold it at anything over 4k for any length of time!! That engine will be goin pop otherwise!
Drive thru the gears, use 40 to get to 80-90mph, then shift to 5th, revs will drop and just cruise (till the next big hill anyway!! )
Kris - yeah, coz of the torque, 5th is probably a dream in urs coz it can pull to high revs in that gear.

"Mattyb" u hit almost 100mph in 4th gear!! and not even to redline yet!!
my Gsi can only hit 90 in fourth n thats to redline, but mind it gets to 90 damn quick!!
and then easlily to 120+ in fifth at about 5revs n thats wen it starts to strugle a bit!

so is the 93 1.4 8v SRi an MPI engine? i have had 120 shown on the clocks with mine, mods are induction kit, zorst and 270 degree lift fast road cams. That was on the flat, but i got no idea how accurate the speedo is

Nope, mine is a 5 speed box. Only early merits had the 4 speed.
As i said, the GSi has a Close ratio box, and so will red line in each gear alot sooner than a wide ratio box, but accelration will be alot better (But fuel consumption higher). The sri/gsi/sxi/sport gear boxes were setr up in such a way that you could driver thru the gears, with 5th taking u right to top speed. ie: you could not reach top speed in 4th.
4th in mine will take me to bout 95-100mph, and 5th bout 105mph tops (down hill). Even at 100mph in 5th, you can see there is loadsa revs left, but the 1.2 8v just doesnt have the power or torque to pull it any further. On mine, there is very little difference in top speed between the 2 gears, but 5th revs bout 1.5k revs less, thus reducing fuel consumption, engine wear and noise considerably.

But i've done 90 in 3rd gear and i recon it could reach 115mph easy.
is this correct, iv got the 1.4 16v sport an i hit the limiter at 80 in 3rd! surely a 1.2 16v cant get to 90 in 3rd?

Yep, unless my speedo is out.
Was done with a PVD BFO + cold air and 13" steel wheels.

Mike - On a 1.2 16v - its fitted with a CR box, so 5th wont b an overdrive. Will be a continuation gear, if u get wot i mean.
Broster - different models have different limiters i believe, and the newer SXi's have a slightly different ration set up to the sport, and so its likely speeds will be different.
