You'd want some ARP rod bolts straight away, id go with the sbd steel rollers for safety. Thats the basics, what else depends on how far you want to take it, how safe you want to be, how much you have to spend and what spec you'll be running.

DOnt forget the valve springs. Only good up to about 7500rpm. Not expensive either.

go for the 2.0 imo....would probably cost the same as what you are thinking plus you get a much faster unit with more torque. you could also sell your 1.6 for about £300 - 400

I'm using standard valve springs and I take them to 8,000rpm without problems.

I've been told that they are fine for this use.

You can get an uprated set for about £100.....

Velos and RRE who did my mapping both advised the standard ones were fine for the job. If you fit wild cams then you will need to change them.

Get a 2.0 with coilovers, unless you're a rally driver the weight at the front aint gonna make that much difference

excuse my ingorance but what are ARP rod bolts and SBD steel rollers..bit new to this stuff

.......my 1.6 engine has done 28k and has never let me down and runs very sweet with not ticks or rattles, oh and sorry its on a V plate as well how much you recon i will get for it?

ARP are a company that make high strength rod bolts. They hold the rods onto the crank, having them snap would pretty much screw the whole engine. If you up the rev limit you want to change the standard ones really.

The 1.4/1.6 16v engines are prone to having weak plastic cam belt rollers, you can get proper pressed metal bearing rollers that are bomb proof from SBD.
