the leon's handling isnt really that special as its based on a golf chassis which is a bit shit really.
theyre gorgeous cars to look at and have a lot of potential, i prefer the looks to the CTR but id rather have CTR engine
best hot hatches i think are:
golf gti mk1
205 gti
R5 GTT
clio 16v/clio williams - very underrated cars, mine is ace
106 gti/saxo vts - you may not like them but theres no denying that theyre good
lancia delta integrale
civic vti

Depends on your definition of a hot hatch really. A lot of mags say the Cooper S is the most complete hot hatch ever. Obviously things like the 205GTi and more recently the 172Cup are more traditional hot hatches (cheap, light, fast etc) but for the more complete package (build quality, performance, handling, residuals, interior etc) the Cooper S is in another league. A hot hatch is all about fun and I challenge anyone to drive a Cooper S and not get out with a huge grin on their face.

Updated as I keep forgetting cars!
Id say the best hot hatches are: (No particular order)
106 GTi
205 GTi
306 GTi-6
Nova
Corsa (Maybe - doesnt really have the hot hatch image as much as the Nova)
Fiesta RS Turbo
Honda Civic Type R (The last one)
VW Golf Mk2 GTi
Clio Williams
Mini Cooper S
Delta Integrales are a bit unreliable really, that is unless Martini are giving you $$$$$ to pay to run it!

mini is not a real true hot hatch, granted it handles well, and is fast(ish) in a straight line but there is a lot more fun to be had in a 106 gti

this can be said of most hot hatches though, cooper s isnt the fastest or the best handling, it is quite heavy for its size so this hinders it a bit

the 106 is a superb car for the money but is very dated compared to the cooper s. still, a decent one is about 12k cheaper so its only to be expected!

alongside the 106 it is the BEST handling hot hatch ever. it isn't the fastest agreed (although it is bloody quick) but its got power where it needs it, highly competitive 0-60, rock solid build quality, stunning interior and the best residuals of any car on the market.

i think the cooper s would struggle to outhandle a 106gti/saxo vts as the torsion bar hatches are in another league
but comparable to more modern hatches i think the cooper s holds its own

The greats :
Mk1 Golf Gti
Mk2 Golf Gti (16v)
Clio 172 + 172 Cup
Clio Williams + 16v
Renault 5 Gt Turbo
Peugeot 106 + 205 Gti
Vauxhall Nova Sr , Sri + Gte.
I reckon a hot hatch has gotta be small... ie no bigger than the mk2 golf.

The Fiesta RS shouldn't be on the list, its pony. The Series 1 RST is an original hot hatch and the first production FWD car to have an LSD, it should definately be on anyones list.
The nova/corsa should not be on the list, in 15 years no-one will have the corsa sport down as one of the greatest ever hot hatches.

Sorry I disagree, its a good motor, good to tune and very fun.

The Nova is one of the classic Hot Hatches. Its has a huge following and history in motorsport and is a proven car. Easy to tune, fix, build, just perfect for the clubman. However, the Corsa as I said above probably wont ever have the following that the Nova has.
