I have a box with undisclosed/undiscovered contents, which I imagine to be what used to resemble the bearings from an IB5 gearbox fitted into a machined BC casing.
Or, a collection of metallic chunks which can be reconstructed with the use of superglue to make an almost working model of a Series 2 RS Turbo viscous diff.
That or the complete end of a CV joint.
All I know is it's definitely not first or second gear, could be third though.

Ahhh.
I on the other hand have a diesel Series 2 Orion van casing containing what 3 and a bit thousand miles ago were new shafts, new bearings and a new set of S2 XR3i Turbo ratios plus un urgraded viscous diff from similar.
It now sounds like a set of Maracas at cold idle.

Mine doesn't rattle, or crunch, or grind.
It just judders like the wheel is held on with one bolt when you drive it, the clutch slips like a well oiled kipper and when you go round a right hand corner, the left hand front wheel locks up completely.
It's fucked either way, and my instincts point towards the diff, especially regarding the last part

When my last box went, I had to limp it the last few hundred yards home with the hazzards on.
It took a sodding eternity.
It felt like I was repeatedly driving over land mines.
Thank god it was at night.
It fially gave up and seized solid half way in the drive.
It took five of us and all our strength to overcome the mechanical resistance in the box and it made a sound like god snapping Panzer gun barrels in half when it finally budged.
