1&1 hosting sucks, i agree...there domains are cheap and there bloody good in terms of customer support though 
i-websolutions.co.uk is who i use for hosting, and at 20 quid a year for 200mb space and 5gig a month bandwidth (+ loads of other stuff) you can go wrong 
btw, if you need temp hosting then i can sort you out considering im not using my space at the moment as im still developing my site etc

i got that i-web that dom mentions (after he recommended it) and had no problems at all - support reply quickly, i pay £1.99 per month for 300 mg and 10gig bandwidth, cant go wrong

Unless you're running a large gallery/multimedia site then server space isn't really anything to worry about - but bandwidth costs can sting when the site becomes popular
