My mates a goldsmith, he won't buy for the same price as he sells
So sending me to a list of goldsmiths/jewellers doesn't really answer my question.

Price of gold fluctuates with the market, you might make more money back but unlike numberplates you're not dependant on finding the small minority of people:
1) In the UK
2) With the same name/car/modification aspirations
3) With the money

Then buy from somewhere else, then sell to him.
If the going rate is £10 an ounce, then why isn't he buying at £10 an ounce?

Which equals a guaranteed return/profit when selling that would be know.
You managed to drag me off the topic with you the original statement was that a number plate is an investment it is as much a valid Investment as gold is a valid investment.

But it is possible to find the above, therefore an investment.
All number personalised plates would've been available at a base rate (£250?) from DVLA at one point in time. The market is now full of plates selling for thousands of pounds. These plates are obviously very good investments.

Provided you can find all the above three, then yes a number plate is in some bizarre world an investment, but it's not as much of a valid investment as gold.

It's not a serious investment in my eyes (also because you get the enjoyment of having the reg itself every day) but that doesn't take anything away from the fact it is not likely to loose value as quickly as say a car and may increase in value if the right person wants it.

How can you enjoy a registration plate?
Don't get me started on people complaining about cars losing value

same reason as how people enjoy owning a modified car. we do it to stand out and attratc attention. theres no point changing everything on ur car and then keeping a standard plate on.
