Shouldn't that be 'both gripping' rather than 'both spinning'?

Its not unknown that they will occasionally mod cars for special projects. Most anti-joy rider stuff has to be quick and nimble.
Merseysides latest Jags also cost twice what they would if they were standard. Most of the extra money goes on radio/video/ANPR equipment but a few mechanical mods wouldn't effect the bill much so I suppose if there's justification for having them they will be bought. The cars certainly all look lower, even the traffic Vectras around here sit a lot lower than standard cars.

Another reason for increasing power as Ian said they are probably full of equipment which slows them down.

Some of the Police Volvos start off as T5-R's too, which already have more power than a T5.

i dont see why they have to be faster than normal cars when the max speed you can do is only 70 and everyone obeys that limit, so really a police car capable of 75 is more than adequate.
lim slip diff, to limit the slip of the diff, lol. that the best thing i read all night

I have a friend who used to be a mechanic with the police in west lothian before he became a mounted officer or something. Anyway, he said the engines aren't modified except for some which have LPG conversions. When he worked on the cars they replaced the brake pads with mintex 'police pads'. That was about it other than removing the fuel cutoff etc.

Maybe because joy riders wouldn't obey the speed limit seeing as they've nicked the car they're driving?

also regards chipping; the turbo pursuit cars could easily benefit from chips for extra boost, no?

Well i know for a fact plolice cars get modified.
North wales police use Ford Galaxys and u can visable see how low the suspension is on them, i always chuckle to myself when i see them go past !
and yes a large no. of T5r's are chipped (increase boost n fueling - hence more power)
