if theres somethign wrong with a sensor or a fan, or a gasket goes, loads of things can cause modern engines to overheat

The engine should also turn itself off if there is a major fault. It probably shuts down if it overheats too much.

Or it can shut the boost off. Or make itself a cold drink...

it may retard the boost, i cant see it shutting down, how dangerous would that be if you were on the move

My 1.2 shut down when the crank shaft position sensor gave up on the motorway. It was an interesting experience to say the least

yes so old model still the E46 the E90 and newer models don't have temp gauges

I like it with the badge off the boot. Have you thought of doing the badges back? I have seen one round my way with black badges on it which looks pretty smart.
