Better built? Doubtful.
Faster? Probably nothing in it on the road and top end Astra IS faster.
Better brakes? What do you base this in?
Looks? I like the look of both, being a Vauxhall I would go for the GSi.
Realibility? Vauxhall, anything VAG will break in my experience and will be expensive to fix.

Better built? Leon is better built
Faster? Dont know
Better brakes? They are shiny and red brembo's on looks yes
Looks? I like the look of both,
Realibility? hmm Difficult one, they both break, but when the VAG's break, there is alot more fuss made out of recalls and issues like MAF'S etc

seats are surprisingly cheap to fix, cheaper than vw/audi, skoda is the cheapest. I find seat cheaper than, vaux.
The brake comment was because they have the brembo setup which is very good.

I would say go for a black LCR but then I am biased

I've never driven an Astra GSi so can't make comparisons on the two but can highly recommend the LCR. I would say at the moment, for £9k you'd get a decent 210 version but come next July they should go down a bit.
I've read though, if you're planning on getting it remapped both the 210 and 225 versions remap to the same which is about 265 - 280bhp. To get the LCR Revo'd would cost you £586 but there are other companies to consider, I'm looking at JabbaSport at the moment.
Corb - you have u2u.

i had this choice when i bought my GSi. I test drove both of these cars, and i fell in love with the astra i found, as it had all the extras, i.e full leather xeon lights etc etc.
Also the Seat has 5 doors, and the back looks horrible IMO. its all down to personal choice in the end. I think the GSi is so much more nicer looking car.
a good excuse to post pic of the GSi

its a very tough choice as i personally love both. I think i would have to sway to the cupra for the better spec and that its VAG. Although there is something about the GSI, cant put my fingure on it though.
Although if you get a cupra it has to be black or an astra silver or blue

Always thought the Leons were a little bland
Interior looks cack too IMO. Well built or not, still looks dull for a 200+ BHP hot hatch
