also, if someone is serious about robbing your car and brings a flatbed, lifts the back wheels off the floor, what stopping them simply rolling it away?

I find this so difficult.....
Dropping the car into neutral before stopping at traffic lights and making myself only use the brake, my foot so wants to go on the clutch even though i know im in neutral...........try it sometime lol Suppose its habbit.

i always press the clutch before starting regardless of whether its in gear or not.
it might reduce strain on the starter motor or might not who cares and anyway the clutch will need to be pressed to put it into gear so it doesnt matter whether its before or after starting

i dont get it, what does depressing the clutch while starting up help?
i usually do it because of spending time in the states and not being able to start a manual car without depressing it regardless of vehicle

As stated several times in this thread and in my manual it helps relives strain on the starter motor and the battery also if you have a dodgy handbrake and park on a hill

Driver Guidelines state that vehicles with a manual gearbox should be left in gear whilst parked as a fail-safe,
Reverse gear should be selected when facing downhill, a forward gear should be selected when facing uphill.
If the car is in gear and the handbrake snaps, or isn't aplied fully then in theory the car shouldn't move!

I never leave it in gear unless I'm parked on a hill, although on my motorbikes most have to have the clutch pulled in to start the bike.

YEs out of habbit.
Becuase if its in gear, and i start it, I can do some serious damage Now its just a reaction.
I always leave my car in gear, you have to with the dodgy handbrakeness of rear discs
I have to pull the clutch in on my bike to start it. Always have. And scooters need the brake pulling in also to start them.

What kind of cock would argue that you shouldn't leave a car in gear.
And you should dip your clutch it's better for your car and it saves you from making a knob of yourself, It takes twice as long to bloody check then use that hand you have been checking with the wobble the steering wheel....... just ffs dip your clutch

I do for the same reason as Robin outlined early on... I learned the hard way when my 2 mth old CTR, handbrake firmly on, rolled off my sloped driveway into a parked car that cars should always be left in gear... thus i always leave my cars in gear thus as soon as i get in, foot on clutch, start ignition, drive off
