i always let the car warm up for 4-5mins before i leave on a morning and by then the choke is off mate so i do have a lil bit heat on my way to work

You have just answered your question!!. Leaving it idling for 5 mins is the reason for poor mpg,why sit 5 mins with it idling there is no need for it,just putting more wear and tear on the engine and using fuel for no reason. I work for a garage and we have customers coming in complaining of the service light coming on before in their eyes the service is due.......but the service is actually due as the amount of engine hours the car has done reducing the viscosity of the oil! equals more likely to cause engine damage and use more fuel!

is this true?i alway thought letting the engine warm up a few mins before setting off was better for the engine.

I'd be interested in this too, i cant see how idling a car to ge tthe oil going round is worse than using the car at full revs from cold

Read your handbook! its not neccessary to idle the engine from cold,When its very cold I start mne and leave it 10 secs then drive away, the engine will warm up more quickly and efficiently being driven from cold than left on idle for 5 mins and as ive already said you will use more petrol and put more wear and tear on the engine by sitting with it idling!

Engines are much less inefficient at cold temperatures, but leaving it running doesn't help. Just get in and drive off - you'll save a bucket in fuel.

You should also remember than whilst the engine may be warm, the transmission, fluids etc won't be so doesn't mean you can rag it straight away.

Well i'll continue to idle mine. I service it reguarly (obssesively actually lol)
I dont rag my car, but i dont like the idea of runnig it from cold - maybe theres a reason mines not tappety like most

I were told by my ferrari friend there is no point in letting it sit there for minutes. The engine just runs round with very little oil due to the low revs. He says its alot better to drive your car very gentley at 2-3k rpms as the oil flows around alot quicker protection it quicker!

You leave it running 5 minutes before getting in to drive 3 miles, no wonder the MPG is crap

It still won't have warmed up properly in either case, just get in and go - will save you a fortune I guarantee.
