Warren G did mine for me. £120 iirc, new chain, sorts the problem.

But from what you've said, I'm 99.9% sure it will be the timing chain. When it's all warm etc and you turn the engine off, does it continuing rattling, or tapping as you put it? Does the car sound like a diesel?

The guidance for the timing chain is replacement at 100k miles HOWEVER they are known to go before. Also, I think the recall is no longer available, so even if the car hasn't had it done, you won't be able to get it done for free.

It's a relatively simple procedure to replace if you have the right Vauxhall equipment. All that is essentially done, is the old chain connected to the new chain, then fed through until the new chain is round the engine. Split old chain from new chain and rejoin new chain.

Strictly speaking, the actually problem is generally the tensioners not being able to tension the stretched chain enough. You can replace the tensioners, but it makes more sense (because it's cheaper) to replace the chain.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Warren replaced my timing chain then I drove 100miles home. Not on new oil, not on nothing. Been fine ever since. Was about 18k miles ago as well.

If its the chain ten yuo have two options. Vauxhal offer a "repair kit" in which a special tool is used to split the chain and then yuo feed the other round. OR yuo can have al the tensioners and rails replaced which is a case of striping the left hand side of the engine including removing the sump. Ths option is quite a lengthy job though

Cheaper than Vauxhall because of their hourly rates.

Cheaper than non-franchised garage because they often don't have the tools to feed the chain through like Vauxhall do, meaning they have to take the engine to bits etc.

obviously not a mechanic then lol

Clearly neither are you then. Its a fucking horrible job to do as its right in the middle of the engine and you need to strip it right down. And as such will cost around £500 by the average garage. Its more cost effective to swap the engine.

Oh an yes they do fail, quite a lot as well. All it is the pressure release valve gets stuck and as such the chain runs dry an thus there you go fucked chain

That isn't how Vauxhall change a chain. I've seen them do it.

All 1.0 12 / 1.2 16v vaux engine's sound tappy - it's nothing to worry about.

If you care a lot, a slightly thicker oil may solve the problem, but I wouldn't care and just ignore it to be honest.

If it is the timing chain, which is noisey because it has stretched, it's pretty much like driving around with a loose-ish cam belt.

I can. Mine was done at 75k.

There was faults with timing chains on C's which had done less mileage hence being a recall.

Most X10XE;X12XE;Z10XE;Z12XE engines sound tappy, because of the timing chain. If it really sounds like a diesel, it will almost certainly be that.

I am talking from experience btw.

Yes. Because Vauxhall have special tools, there is no need to take the engine to bits. However, if a garage doesn't have the special tools, then they'll have to.

Doing it the Vauxhall way, that is as much of the engine that has to be taken apart, i.e. the rocker cover. Hence why the new cam chain kits have chain, connectors and rocker cover gasket.

There is no need to, because that isn't essentially the problem.

What happens is:

1) The chain stretches, tensioners tension.
2) The chain stretches some more, and the tensioners can no longer tension. This create a slapping, tapping diesel like noise.
3) There are 2 remedies
a) The chain is replaced. Naturally, this isn't stretched which therefore means the tensioners can tension again.
b) Replace the tensioners, so that the stretched chain is now under tension.

Step a) is much easier, if you have the right tools.
