Or it might be a paperwork mistake. There might be an honest explaination, I just don't see firstly how you would introduce the problem, not like the cars were next to each other on the forecourt or sold on the same day, they are months apart. They would have to assign one log book to one car incorrectly, then months later do the same in reverse without noticing and without recalling the first car for rectification.
I would even guess that statistically there are more cars ringed than paperwork problems of that magnitude.
I know where my money is. Best you can hope for is that the girl gives you your money back or that you're able to lose it on the quiet. I'm quite surprised that if you've spoken to the DVLA, they haven't even notified the insurer to find out if they still have an interest. You can hope that they don't for the sake of 100 quid, they won't make that back so its hardly worth them coming to your house to collect it to earn 30 quid taking it in, but I would think the legal thing to do would be to consult them.
You won't get charged if you do - unlike if you try and scrap it yourself on the quiet knowing what you know, and implicate yourself in a charge of handling stolen goods or something.
Fact the music tbh. If you offer to strip it and destroy the shell they may just agree for the sake of closure.

Got it started last night and confirmed that the head gasket had went
I was bored so i took the head off. Now she looks like this....
I took the £30 worth of petrol out too and stuck it in the Corsa. This only owes me £70 now.
No point in doing the head until i've spoken to the DVLA.
Nobody fancy doing a propper HPi for me please?

Yeah, that's a problem It's not stolen though.
Hopefully the DVLA will sort something out. I hope they don't take the car from me.

So the VIN has been scrapped and it's on the wrong plates. Does this not set off any alarm bells?

At the risk of being doom-monger yet again, this could also indicate that the VIN number of the scrapped car has been ringing on to the bodyshell of the car that you have in your possession.

yes you both maybe right. I'm not panicing though. The DVLA know about the problem and are fine with me scrapping it.
I'm only concerned about losing the £41 that a vic check will cost if i lose the car.
Now...This might work. I have all the previous MOTs and service history going back to when it was new.
If i can find one before 2006 with the "wrong" VIN number on i'll know it probably wasn't scrapped and ringed because the details not matching would pre-date the scrapping of the origional VIN.

The VIN should be written on the MOT certificates.

The earliest MOT i have is 2002 and it also has the wrong VIN number.
This proves the error pre-dates the scrapping of the other car by 4yrs.
My money is now on a mistake by DVLA.
Will get it VIC checked when i return from OZ

If it fails a VIC, it just ends up on a Q plate doesn't it?
That's what I was told when I put the Laguna in for its VIC.
