Just to enhance on this, what kind of testing does actually go into ensuring the engines and components are going to last? I've always wondered

As long as its warm revving the car hard is fine.

Wouldnt advise smashing it into the limiter all the time though as the stopping and the cutting that the limiter does is quite sharp and will jolt the engine etc

Because it's more fuel efficient and not putting constant strain on the engine?

Remind me not to buy a car from you

no strain is being put on the engine, in traffic its 3/4k to change. As I say at least twice a day my car will use a huge amount of the engines rev range.

My car is serviced as the book by specialists (pumaspeed) and it is always commented how good the car is.

The micra would wind itself round to 7k daily, and was well over 120,000 miles and was still going strong when the rust becoming tiresome.

I would personally prefer to buy a car with well used engine that has been looked after than one that is never opened up. some things on some engines don't even activate until the higher rev range.

Also fuel efficient, I bought my car to drive, not join greenpeace.

Car (Diesel)

Change up between 2k - 3k, when overtaking take it up to 4k

Bike

Cold - change up at 4.5k ish, when revs fall below 2k while moving it shudders and stalls

Warm - anything up to 13k, depends on the speed limit really, seeing as it does around 50mph in 1st gear at 13k

For me it all depends on how much fuel is in the car and how much money i have to top up.

i've revved it to the limiter before, but it reaches maximum power at 5.9k and that's th ebest rpm to shift up.

my mate at work has regularly revved diesels to near enough the limiter on a brand new built engine with zero miles, not even in a car yet

it's a safe limiter that's all.
