Band of Brothers is the best war film (as such) I have watched to date. Had me hooked and I watched the whole lot in a day or something.

Saving Private Ryan is my 2nd fav.

Im with OJC on the deer hunter, tripe.

battle of britain
downfall
band of borthers (masterpeice)
pianist
hamburger hill
full metal jacket
platoon
Dark blue world
Memphis belle
apocolypse now
brotherhood
enemy at the gates
downfall (masterpeice)
saving private ryan
black hawk down
three kings

If you are looking for a WAR movie then black hawk down is by far the most war-rific. Theres about 4minutes of talking in the beggining and then BOOM. Plus it has every actor bar Tom Hanks you have ever heard of. Its immense and literally exhausting to watch but oh so good.

I'm still gobsmacked that Ollie not only dislikes The Deer Hunter, but by how much he dislikes it.

Memphis Belle is another one of my favourites.

'When Trumpets Fade' is a good war movie, it's one of those that you can watch over and over again as it's straight to the point.

Already said but Band of Brothers. It may of been a tv series but they had so much money to make it, it has film visuals. It really is epic. Can't wait for the pacific on sky movies next month

I could just go through the old war movie box set that's lying about Ice Cold in Alex is a good one, but not quite about the war itself. Has some hilarious errors in it as well.

Ice Cold in Alex is quite good, I like those older WW2 movies, have a good feel about them.

I was watching one at lunch, 'Torpedo Run' from the 50's

Italian ones must involve lots of white flags? Same goes for French.

Visually yes, but the example I keep going back to 'When Trumpets Fade' you can clearly see the money hasn't been spent compared with Band of Brothers but it's just as effective as a war movie.

It slipped under most peoples radars as it was released at the same time as the shitty Saving Private Ryan which is the biggest over-rated piece of toss since Deer Hunter.

Band of Brothers is epic, yes. But not the best. As Ollie said, it's not the budget that makes the film.

Ya, another one that is overlooked by most. The battle scenes are far better than Band of Brothers/SPR, the bit where they are in the city centre is just awesome and the attack on the hill at the end.
