Now, lets say somebody buys a car with a personal plate already on, and had no idea of its value. If the DVLA were to contact them and say they have been offered a sum of money for it, would this be OK?
No. There is no way of telling if the person with the plate actually wants to sell or not without them physically putting it up for sale. So again, giving my personal details out would piss me off yes.
Are you being serious? Really? At what point have the 'personal details' been given out?
THE DVLA WILL CONTACT THE OWNERS!
Because you think only 1 person would want that private plate? Theres already 2, you and the owner already. You would have a phone calls on many occasions and would eventually piss you off.

Lol, the fact that you keep typing random things that have nothing to do with what i am saying. I am talking about them not handing over any personal data, and you have replied by stating they would receive lots of phonecalls?

Im very confused. I'll break it down into steps.
1. Contact DVLA regarding numberplate
2. DVLA contact numberplate owner, and ask if they are willing to sell
3. Numberplate owner replies 'Yes' or 'No'
4. DVLA contact you again, to let you know the outcome.
NO details passed
NO angry men
NO harm done, surely?

Anyone contacting me regarding things I own asking If I would like to sell would piss me off. If I didnt want it, i'd put it up for sale. You may have a very popular plate and be contacted every week by the DVLA. Would you not mind that?

Ok, thanks for the decent reply, it looks like progress. Yes, it would. I don't think it would be too hard to implement a system that would allow one enquiry per plate. First come, first served Then, if the plate does come up for sale, the interested party would be contacted first, also creating a nice easy sale for the seller.

Excellent. I feel you should contact the DVLA and let them know your idea. People are missing out on number plates they could own!

Yeah u r a doyle even concidering that idea would work. The only reason personalised plates were created was to make money. Obviously. Your idea would require staffing and take up DVLAs time, in turn, costing money.

Ignoring the HUGE overhead your plan would entail Bissmire (that would end up in the tax payers forkign out) ... hands up who likes cold callers ?

Ok, i see you are not going to agree with anyone else, and that your assumptions are spot on. Now, lets say somebody buys a car with a personal plate already on, and had no idea of its value. If the DVLA were to contact them and say they have been offered a sum of money for it, would this be OK?

Lol, I am not planning on overhauling the DVLA registration department. The whole argument has been over the issue of handing out persoanl information. Of which, may i add, was never even suggested.

I've only skimmed this thread, but wouldnt the dvla contact the person for you? I can't see them just handing over details so you can do it yourself.
Might ask them and see

My point exactly, the person who owns the plate might not even want it, but if offered £300 could be interested No harm in asking is there. As mentioned, everything has a price
