well no, you can do it using social media like 4chan, like telling all the nerds to access a website at once and shit like that. Or yeah using groups of machines that have been infected with a virus/worm, the name for a collection of infected machines controlled by one person/control panel is a Botnet.

Seems very complicated, but probably easy for 4chaners.
What information, just going on/off the site several times very fast?

yeah or going through a process that the website gives you, for example if the website allows you to buy something you could get x amount of people to all log onto the website at the same time and buy serveral items, then do it again and again and again.
Though all of this very creative stuff isnt done anymore, most attacks are just a fuckton of machines (we're talking hundreds of thousands) sending something called a SYN packet to a host, a SYN packet is basically like a hello message from one machine to another when they want to start a conversation to pass data back and forth.
If you have a few thousand machines opening up conversations with one host but dont continue the conversation (i.e. just say Hi but dont actually pass any data or close the conversation) then the host will fill up its connection table and would be unable to respond to legitiment requests.

I see, there must be thousands of 4channers doing this then?

possibly, or maybe its got so much attention on the internet that their webservers cant take it.
But think of this, you could have 1000's of 4channers viewing their website no problem, but it only takes one of them who owns a botnet to take the site down

How long would it take to "reset" the site? would it have to be done manually?

They are using page refreshing software too. So they end up with thousands of 4chans spamming the same search term every few seconds and therefore get millions of requests on that search term.
