If you get an MX5 get the 1.6 and not the 1.8.
As mentioned though I'd have thought something like a VTS would be quite good.

i'd go for something along these lines:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2701809.htm
it has 4wd and will be decently light if stripped! all it would need is a decent set of tyres, brakes, roll cage and buckets and harnesses.

The 1.6 is the better engine. I forget why now

completley pointless, karl who now races in the atom raced that class last year, there are serious amounts of money in that class, 700+ bhp.. its just not something i want to get into.
i have a budget of about 1k for the car and the same again for modifying.

Early ones were 115bhp an later ones were restricted to 90bhp when the 1.8 came out.
Yeah seeing as the mk2 1.8's are 146bhp then fair enough

That advert is rather naughty. Its a UK turbo, not an STi as the title claims hence missing 4pots and good drivetrain
But as per Chris' comments, 4WD sprinting is silly money and full on stripping bounces you up categories.

Chris, the 1.6 MX5s are revvier than the 1.8s, but still, I think 115 or 130bhp is crap for hillclimbing.

Surely you need to decide on what class you're entering before choosing a car. The class regs will dictate how light and powerful your car can be, plus you can see what the other guys are using and make your decision from there.

Citroën AX GT with the 1.6 16valve engine would make a great hill climb car.

correct me if im wrong, but wouldnt running a 1.6 in a 1.8 catagory just be pointless?
dont forget i cant fully strip the car it still needs its seats in etc so the more power the better really.
cant be turbo'd needs to be naturally aspirated.

The weight of a fully interior'd ax GT is about the same as an empty crisp packet lol. The bigger the engine doesn't always mean it's better.
