I thought to be able to co op, you both needed to be roughly in the same part of the game.
I'm sure on the game it mentions it.

Got a copy the other day and every time I try and co op with anyone I just end up standing there and being attacked by them. Bloody useless so I just man up and do it alone

nah, i join my mate and all his zombies are easier to kill because i'm a higher level, it says something about not a good match, but still lets you join

I read somewhere that they average the level of zombies out if the two players are different levels but I can't quite be sure on the legitimacy of the source and it was a while ago.
