i think somebody who lives breathes and thinks about cars.... doesn't have to be anal about them but would just go out for a drive even though they don't need to go anywhere.. knows which cars drive and feel the best to be in and appreciates diesels don't count as a car but just a workhorse..

Like he said.
I do over 30k a year in a Transit, but still go out for a pointless drive in my weekend car, just for fun.

Just to clarify, if I wanted a car to get me from a to b I would have a Diesel, but I wouldn't try saying it was a performance car.

and knowing what your fiddling with makes you a petrolhead imo
for instance, my brother has had ferraris and lambos and knows about cars, but, ask him to point out a part of an engine ie the fuel pump and he hasn't got a clue.....he couldn't even open the boot (engine cover) on his lambo

i agree john, but I think a true petrolhead would at the very least know how to change oil or spark plugs.

Maybe owned petrol cars before?
For me, when I bought my diesel it was at a point where nothing petrol could match the running costs (particularly insurance as I was still young and building up NCB) So rather than settle for a lesser petrol or pay a stupid amount on insurance I gave the diesel a bash.
3 years on, I could go for a petrol car but now Im at the stage where id rather not waste money on running costs when I can run a similarly powered car cheaper, and also at the point in life where id rather put money away towards a house than have a car that I can take on track, boast about or get alot of noise out of

Well so would I, Mazdas worth about 8k, 335 about 25k, no brainer really then sell it and buy an M3, the far more exciting car in the BMW range

someone who actually understands what goes into his car
and takes care in choosing parts
not just an ebay whore that buys chrome wolfrace alloys and a k&n 57i
before sticking a fli sub in the boot and driving around with his hood up

I think a real petrolhead won't always take the most sensible option, the love for a car will overide any feeling of comprimise.
Everyone loves cars, the same way everyone loves beautiful woman, but you can't really call yourself a love god if you have just settled for 2nd best.

a petrolhead pays twice as much for a corrado with twice the mileage instead of getting the golf with less miles, less money and less likely to go wrong

what he said tbh, Id like to think i was a petrol head as i like all aspects of cars (would love to be more mechanically minded to).
and if i had the choice well... no if i could afford to go back to petrol i would be there in a shot but derv will have to do and tbh... i cant fault my current car at all does everything i need it to do.

I have always thought its someone who has a decent amount of knowledge and appreciates a good car no matter of fuel type etc, i cant remember who it was but it was a interview with a celebrity and they said to him you love cars he said replied yes but i dont drive them i just like to collect them as i appreciate the hardwork, engineering and beauty behind them.
So you dont necessarily have to drive your car for no reason i think you need to have a decent amount of respect for the automobile as a whole.
