I do live right out in the sticks, although there is a small exchange down the road about a mile away. This was all fine til BT decided to modify there lines about 50 yards down the road!

Had a thought, Sky used to give out Netgear DG834G routers - these are a bit crap and tend to die after about a year. Perhaps you've got a faulty router.

Well, they fixed it. Back up to the speed I was on before the fault - 7mbps.
Job done.
