Funny thing is that's the opposite of what I was saying?

Gearbox gets better when warmed up, so check it when cold. Noisey/worn racks are common as stated earlier.
As for fuel, they aren't bad. If i'm on long runs it will average about 35 - 40 mpg and will obviously drop if you're constantly in vtec. Handling is fantastic and they respond well to breathing mods. People tend to get a bit obsessed with checking the oil on them and its supposed to be within the norm for one to use 1ltr every 1000 miles but again that's down to how you drive.
I'd suggest looking at DC2s aswell

Great driving position, look good IMO, handle good, reliable
Not great on fuel, needs decent tyres to make the most of them, not THAT quick IMHO don't get all the VTEC hype as i'm used to turbo power.
A MK5 golf GTI would be a better car although slightly more expensive.
In what regard would you say the Golf would be better? Maybe build quality is better but Honda's are fantastically put together as well. The Type R is a far far far superior performance hatch in almost every single aspect.
explain how its a far superior performance hatch?
I'm not going by figures (although the CTR is better there too), I mean driver involvement, feel, the noise, the way you have to wring it's neck. Naturally not everyone wants to do that but I've yet to see one review (since most people are going by them) that rated the Golf better?
I don't see why you'd want a nasty jap interior, bad seats unless it's got recaros etc...
Golf is a far far better chassis!! If an edition 30 you can have a healthy useable 360+horse with no traction issues from a filter, exhaust, fuel pump and software. Better re-sale value. German quality more economical, refined, I know where I'd rather be.

Youre comparing an edition 30 to an ep3
Whats the going prices for them? No where near as cheap as an ep3 for a start
