I'd go with the one that will do over 200 miles more to a tank for the extra £7 in fuel it will cost. Go drive a 335d they're really bloody fast.

I thought you were comparing the E9x model. The E46 M3 engine is 12 years old now, the 335 engine is what, 4 years old? It's no surprise that with 8 years newer technology that they've made a car with more power really.
I still stand by the fact that it's still no M3, whether that be E46 or E92, if you haven't driven one you really can't understand
Like I said can't compare them at all

comparing old vs new is ridiculous. just like this comparison.
at least compare a 335d with an m3 from the same year.

What's BMW fan got to do with it? You are comparing an old shape with a new shape, if the new shape wasn't faster do you not think they have failed as a car company?
And why do you think the 12 year old model is the same price as a 4 year old model John? Maybe that should tell you something

Because price doesn't come into it in terms of matching performance
That's like saying a you could compare an e60 to a 335d as its similar price
It surely has to be like for like I.e similar year and at least the same floor plan and model design
Your agruement is more about which provides better value not which is the better car
Like I posted early our comparing to different generations of models. To compare the 335d ou need to be looking at he 335i and e9x M3 not the generation before m3 as its not the same model. For starts the e9x is a larger platform, heavier car and completely different geometry, drive train and chassis

He was just going by the price of both cars. Remember the 46 M3 was over £40k new back in the day. Do you think the older M3 is better than the diesel 335???

But you still can't do that can you.
The new m3 is over 40k so why not compare that
You can't compare a 8 year old to a 4 year old car on a different platform
Surely you would appreciate that

Also I think this post highlights how the game has moved on
The very nature you wold compare an e9x 335d against Previous m3 shows how good the dervs have become. However the m game has moved on as the current m3 is an awesome bit of kit and is easily a better car than its derv form

I do appreciate that. I just still would have thought that the 46 m3 would be a hell of a lot faster than the new style diesels.

How come. E46 is 343bhp and the derv can get close to that with more torque

ffs why are you two bitching?
if i have £11-12k max then i cannot afford a fucking e92 m3 can i..
i asked why if these are so fast then why dont more people buy these and not an e46 m3? its a simple question that graham actually answered with the handling thing.... i didnt realise the standard e46 is so differant from a e46 m3
it still stands to reason that the 335d and 335i are as fast as an e46 m3 on the ROAD and are bloody good value for near supercar performance in a saloon car at £12k
ffs

E46 M3 isn't fast though, 12 years ago maybe it was I don't know what cars you'd compare it against, but in modern days 343bhp is easy to get, a 2.0 TFSI Golf makes 360bhp with a couple of mods and a map! They are no supercar so it's no surprise than a Diesel with 8 years technology over it can be made faster.
There is no doubting Diesels are fast nowadays, I don't think anybody is arguing it. But comparing the E46 M3 and E9x 335D is ridiculous due to age/platforms/car characeteristics
Even I couldn't compare the E92 335D and E92 M3 as one is a cheaper running car with a bit of poke and one is BMW's top model with everything uprated to drive perfectly and handle the power much better. It's an ///M car, they'd be out of business if they weren't better...

I think there is a much bigger difference between the E46 330D & the E46 M3, compared to the E9x 335D & E92 M3. The 335D are very good cars in terms of performance, but there are still so many differences on the M3 compared to it which makes it the better 'drivers' car. I appreciate that's not what everyone wants on a road car but that's what the M series are all about.
And if I didn't have my M3 I would probably have a 335D or 335i, they are so nice and like you say for the money it's hard to get something as nice for the money.

Didn't JC test the new 5 series diesel on the recent Top Gear, and say it was every bit as good as the M5 and you would be stupid to pick an M5 over the diesel??

Nobody is knocking you for that John but you are trying to compare them still Running costs on the M3 are a different league to the 335 so I can see why someone would want to go for the cheaper to run car.
