Love the current S3s, in black they are easily the nicest hatchback available. The only problem i have with Audis though is i think they date really bad as soon as the newer model comes out, if it wasnt for that i'd be seriously looking at getting one.

That Pistonheads article is a load of toss, you want to be spending a few more quid than £10k on a 911, otherwise you'll end up with a bit of a ropey one. Especially when you can get a really nice Boxster for that amount.

Bloke at work got a 10k 996 c2 cab and it's been alright. Don't think he drives it much though.
Think I'd be too worried about rms failure. 996 with a megzer for 20k..much more tempting!!

Ims is the problem, not rms and from what I can make out it's another forum thing. It has happened but outside of Porsche forums nobody has heard of it.
Edit to say that rms is another problem that exists, just not the one that means new engine.

To a certain degree, but the ims bearing, rms seal and bore cracking failures is well known to be frequent and expensive problem.
7k rebuild IF your gamble goes south!

Bore cracking were mostly replaced at the start under warranty from my understanding.

Rear main seal failure isn't too much of a problem, just get it swapped when the clutch dies. Got a receipt for the one on mine and it was about £400 - there's a fair bit of labour to replace that £10 seal (doesn't include a new clutch as it had 'significant life in it'). If the intermediate main shaft bearing goes then rebuilds start at about £2.5k - it is an issue, but as John said the internet may have blown it out of proportion. Cracked liners tended to happen on the very earliest cars and were sorted by means of recall.
There's a bit of a consensus out though - if you get a car which has made it to over 60-70k miles then it'll probably be ok. There are always exceptions though and the repair bills can be painful!

The pistons can D chunk too - i.e. a d shaped bit falls off. I don't know much about that one though. I think it's something to do with the early liners they used.
