My money is on Carphone Warehouse or Waterstones next. I've not looked at their balance sheets though so it's a bit of a stab in the dark.

I'm always thought Homebase would be next. Not particually cheap for anything, all shit quality stuff and the stores are depressing

The main businesses under threat are those that have stiff competition from online retailers. I don't think Homebase will do too badly, a lot of the stuff isn't easy to get online.

Good tbh, shops are shitholes normally run by people with no social skills and long hair, no order in them at all, everything stupidly overpriced.

yup you need to see that kind of thing in person to decide whether it is useful. Costco or Walmart style megastores would do it for them though, if they ever really mad eit big here

I think Waterstones will be ok. Loads of people still prefer proper books and their shops are of a high quality.

Homebase on the other hand is usually a dive. The death of focus shows that not all diy chains are able to keep their heads above water

I predicted this in the play.com thread just last week

I'm wondering whether diy chains like b&q will ever go down? It's not as easy buying bigger stuff online due to extortionate delivery costs, but most stuff is considerably cheaper to begin with.

If I had a gift card and dvds in my hand, i'd be dumping the gift card on the till and walking out.

It's been paid for at some point. Not our fault they went down.

Thats not how it works though is it The gift card just means youre a creditor of HMV, and creditors tend to get shafted when businesses go into admin. There will be plenty more that get shafted more than £10.

Could they do anything if you presented them with a gift card then took items to the value of it?

It's a bit like when people send bailiffs in for money owed and take items to cover the costs instead if they have no money

I know strictly it isn't, the same problem happened when comet went down.

Funnily enough, a day after media coverage, they announced they will accept gift cards.

Same will happen here.

Judging by the lack of security, that is how it works
