Maybe worded that wrong.
Things like larger over-heads for places in London, or the likes where generally things are more expensive.
You can still get a good job for less from some1 who dosn't have as high over-heads. People just assume that because the price is more expensive, the job is going to be much better.

I don't mean they churn out shit, just like if a customer comes to us, we will offer to take them back home, collect them to get the car back etc.
We also give NHS discount, and offer a free touch up/polish service for when the NHS cars are going back to lease. Things like that are why we have regular customers that recommend us etc

Guy on ScoobyNet resprayed his own car not so long back, he's a bodyshop professional so had access to the booth/equipment etc.
He broke it down as follows:
6 hours for two people to do a complete strip down of trim, glass, etc. (12 hours)
Three people prepping for 13 hours (39 hours)
Two people for ten hours spraying (20 hours)
Two people for 8 hours rebuilding (16hours)
I make that 87 man hours. Bear in mind it was his own car, so I imagine things were uberly perfect... but you'd expect that for any car from a professional.
His last customer respray before his own was a 60hour GTR. I make that over £2k on manhours alone before materials and profit cut.

Doesn't quote for panel time but maybe in prep time, polishing time, but polish normally comes under paint time. It's about right.
All the things take time, masking, can take alot of time. Flatting and polishing alot.
It's not a simple in and out day job.

John d can get inspection II's for half the price anyone else would pay. So I would assume he gets sweatshop labour rates for body shops too.
My paintjob is not dull, but it is not perfect either. A cheaper paintjob doesn't mean it isn't shiny 
The Z3 I bought was shiny, then the lawyer fell off 6 months later.....

We use a dealer at work for all our repairs now, got a £25 per hour rate. Last place we used was around £40 per hour and new spot is a lot better.
Place that painted my Corsa and numerous other stuff was a fantastic painter if you paid the going rate. Luckily I had a hell of a good deal on my car.

I work in a sweatshop at my basic rate per hour is 15.39 + 33%. Hardly minimum wage.

I had a full re spray on a blob eye impreza for £500 . I didn't know the guy either , the quality was good enough to sell. I normally send all mine to one lad who's work is impeccable , I can't get a whole medium car done for £800, that's with panels off and oven . All these body men on here that quote £2k etc for a standard car respray on here are dreamers or very lucky that they get work.
IMO of course , price doesn't always reflect quality .
Was obviously done with emulsion in a good paintshop the materials alone would cost that if base and clear then the prep that needs to be done you really are the biggest full of shit blagger on here IMHO
