4G works over a longer range than 3G, hence it's popularity in the US - That's the real advantage of it (the higher connection speed is pretty useful too).

Sounds like what happened when 3G began to get rolled out. I wonder if I signed up to a 3G service with someone whether it would automatically become 4G when the rest roll it out next year?

For now yes, the rest of the 4G spectrum is going up for auction later on this year.

The only reason I'm keen for 4G is to provide a more reliable signal on my commute, but it sounds like that won't be the case for the first phase of 4G, so in that case, I'll wait until O2 have it.

Tried to request a nano sim from 02 again. "Come to the shop on 21st" what a joke, wait at home for iPhone 5, drive 30mins to 02 shop, wait inline for a nano sim, do a sim swap same day as everyone else, drive 30mins home and set phone up.
No thanks, just send me one out to my house so I can swap ready for 21st.

4G doesnt work over a longer range than 3G per se, its frequency specific. Clearly 2600MHz LTE is going to reach a longer range than 3G as 3G uses 1800MHz usually, but not all 4G is 2600MHz.
In any case, its a moot point as MNOs will be using lower quality yet longer reaching 1800/2600MHz in the rural areas and the lower frequency, higher quality yet shorter reaching 700/800MHz in the cities, spectrum-dependent clearly.
PS thanks to Apple for making everyone now use the term LTE instead of 4G, as it should be :/
