So basically the left hand tyre is apparently stronger because it has more load on it during a race.

Why not just make them both the same? Deffo sounds like straw clutching.

Don't get me wrong I don't think they are totally to blame, it must be hard getting the tyres right with so many restrictions, but this latest excuse is pretty poor.

Besides the suspected cause was from the sharp edges of the raised kerbs, in the insides of the corners, meaning that in fact if fitted correctly the weaker tyre would be at more risk of slicing on a clockwise circuit. The fact the tyres were going on a left hand turn (4?) highlights even more this issue if the teams had fitted the weaker tyre to that side of the car

That's not right, they're both the same strength but the cords and wires inside run in a certain direction so the tyre behaves in a certain way, like a bias ply tyre.

If you mount the RH on the LH and vice versa, the tyre is trying to unravel itself.

Worryingly, certain teams have realised they can get better times with the tyres on wrong, as there's less drag, risky business though.

Steve, because of the internal structure of the tyre, the sidewall will be more resistant to abrasion in one direction of rotation than the other.

ok, but the tyres were slicing, I cant see how this would have not been the case whichever way the cords were running.

It would have still caused slicing but because of the way the cords run, it would have been less prone to failure.

Imagine a fence panel, run something down it quickly, it glides over with no damage, run it the other way it digs in, causing displacement of the slats.

The cords are the same. In one direction, they just slide over the kerb and there's no issue, the other way they can be snagged and weaken, causing deflation later on.

I agree that the tyres should probably be fitted the right way, but I think its a bit of a poor show for Pirelli to suddenly raise the issue now, im sure the tyres shouldn't be slicing like that regardless and im sure Pirelli were aware this practice was happening

Agreed but you'll never get a 'yep, it's our fault' from any manufacturer or supplier.

What was the exact problem? Lefts being swapped for rights would still mean that the outside wall was on the outside and the inside on the inside - or were the tyres actually being flipped around on the rims?

They spray stenciled initials of drivers on the inside walls of the tyres and I've seen them before on the outside so I don't think this is anything new, but Pirelli are just pulling the "we told you so" card on all of the guidelines such as pressure, camber and direction I guess.

The problem is the tyre is designed to rotate in one direction. Running them the wrong way means they get too hot and try to unravel themselves.

Its F1 any advantage and the teams will exploit it. Pirelli have giudlines on pressure, camber etc they cant be held accountable for something outwith there control.

Ah well, so long as i get this season. Rip off cunts, thats going to be a decision to make later on, despise the cost they charge for sports, got next to no interest in Premier League football, so Id be paying just for the F1 and Cricket.

Could that be to blame for the delamitation (sp) we saw earlier in the season?

Didn't think we had many cricket fans on here, might have to start an Ashes thread.

Big mistake from Mercedes sitting out the end of Q2, I had Hamilton Rosberg Vettel for quali so they ballsed that up for me!

Impressive again from Lewis, fingers crossed his bad luck has run out, deserves a win.

vettel will be half a second quicker than the rest of the grid off the line due to all the home fans wanking him off.

Can't see lewis getting out of the drs zone tbh.

Its the price, over £400 a year for 2 sports granted id watch the football too but still, feels dirty putting that sort of money inyo sly for sports then moaning about them for making football the way it is today...

But aye Dave, love my cricket, need a general cricket thread starting as i love my County Cricket just as much as England, helps that Yorkshire are going well!

Back to the F1, that was the strangest dry quali ive ever seen. Pretty standard Q1, but Q2 was mad. Teams seemed to gain about 1 second in the space of 5 minutes. Nearly caught RB out too with Webber.

Lewis nails it when it matters again, superb, especially since his set up was all over the show in FP2&3, he was miles off, amazing how he and the team turned that around. Seems the effects of the tyre change hasnt been as easy to predict as many thought.
