yesh it would make sense to be able to accelerate as much as the engine is allowed to, whilst reaching peak power in top gear going over the 1/4 line

If the car can pull top speed, i.e. hit the rev limiter when flat out, it will go faster flat out theoritically, because bigger wheels = higher ratio. acceleration will never be helped though, your right there

A lot of the reason 17's slow you down, is not the size, its the weight of the things..
1lb rotation weight = 10lbs of static weight..
So if your 17's are 10lb heavier than standard you gonna be the equivilant of 50kg worse off...
Also if you took two rims the same weight, one 15 and one 17, the 17" would still take a lot more energy to turn, as the rotational mass is further out..
ITs gonna hurt your acceleration even over 60..

The width of a wheel also makes a fair difference over acceleration. Wider wheel will effect the bhp at wheel figure too

i stick by my comments as its the weight of the 17's on the driveshafts that cause drag.
i.e. from a standing start the driveshafts have to push extra weights of the wheels more, but when theyre rolling the wheels already have momentum so don't require as much energy to push them
vibrio - you are a c0ck SMB

yeh i know ultimately im worse off all the time with the 17's on, but im saying that the effect is lessened further up the range.
i.e. the drag on the driveshafts won't be the same from a standing start as it is when the car is already moving
