scrap it, buy a 306 turbo diesel with a bosch fuel pump, run it on vegetable oil, save a packet. Don't run it on ones with lucas puel pumps though as it will knacker it, gutted i've a lucas.

Gladly not, Just gutted i've got a lucas pump.
Either pump though, its still a group 5 motor, economical, decent handling, and not too slow after a tweek that can be done for free. Definatly a good choice for a first or second car. Mines gone me proud as a student commuting.

my mate had a 1.2 8v which had done 120thousand miles and still going today i remember him doing about 50-70miles on a fiver and he ragged it everywere.

try doing a service oil, plugs, air filter,

have you got any exhaust or after market airfilter on?

do you turn the car of and back on again often?

Its recently had a service mate.
Ive got a sports air filter and a back box on.
Don't really turn the car off and on that often, usually just drive to work, park up and then drive home. My old man reckons its because I drive round town quite a lot and its stop start but I should still be getting more than 180 miles? At the moment im on 96miles since I filled up and just over half a tank.

I feel like a cock the amount of money I must of wasted.
Thought something was wrong when my old man gets one tank a week too in his 2.2 litre and he drives to Watford everyday.

My cambelt is new and oil has been recently changed.
Is there a good chance its the spark plugs then?

Not sure mate, but i dont exactly drive like an old man and im getting around 280 without problem, and my engine has done 102k, just good servicing and maintenance i think, not sure of the solution tho, dont understand why you lot are getting so low mpg.

Also with the spark plugs, to check those you need to measure the spacing between using shims.

"Erm, no its not my mates get around 300"

I have heard lots of people say that 1.2/1.4 8v engines get poor mpg but ive never seen it.

I used to drive a 1994 1.4 8v with 85k on the clock and it used to average 48mpg on the motorway. Managed 435 miles to the tank before the fuel light (one gallon left) even came on. Around town it was pretty shocking though, 270-300 max.

take the air fliter of and stick standard air box back on joel just do it for 1 night or a week then see how many miles you get then, town driving will hurt the miles but not that much.

What car was this is in? Dad had the VAG 1.9TDi in his old Ford Galaxy and it would average 45+ in normal driving and more like 50 on a long run which is good for a car of that size.

His 2.0 TDi Golf does over 50 too.

Mine is doing about 42-43 at the moment but I have more power than Dads Golf and I drive it a bit quicker

I had a 1.2 8v a few years ago and it was not as good on fuel as the 1.2 16v that I had after. But it wasn't as bad as the fella that started this thread

either your leaking fuel or your engine is on its way out, in my 1.6 gsi driving like a total brick foot i get about 30mpg and when it was a 1.4 16v i was getting 38mpg odd so something really isnt right...

Unfortunately, yes.

Will try swapping the air filter around, hope it isn't the engine.
