Personally i smoke...in my own abode, and I pay a shed load of tax to kill myself.
What do the Gov expect to gain from this (apart from £££)?
Votes is the answer, because at the end of the day people will live longer, the pension fund will be under more strain as will be the NHS...as surely everybody will die of good old 'old age'
I, for one, will be interested to see how this will work when I bring some cigarettes back from the EU
And I've never really 'got' the second hand smoke argument....the smoking ban was/is in place to protect people who work in smoke filled environments, not people who chose to be in such an environment in the first place

You never hear of a nicotine fuelled rampage on the news, driving under the influence of nicotine isn't illegal either...
Alcohol accounts for a large percentage of visits to A+E, in fact, I'd be amazed if the figure for alcohol related hopspitalisation wasn't larger than that for smoking related.
But drinking is fine. Getting pissed and attacking people isn't damaging to other people's health at all.
Here here.

Read what I said again - Someone having a few drinks does no harm to those around them (if they stick to the law)

Someone having a few cigarettes does no harm to those around them now they're outside.
There is no point in making it any worse for smokers, they already have to stand in the rain/snow/wind/hail because of an addiction, I don't see the govt. forcing alcoholics outside.

I don't think the people drinking attack people argument is very good at all.
I'm sure some smokers go and attack people, doesn't mean they all do.

No, it's not a good argument as it doesn't side with you. My apologies.

No its not a good argument because people can go out and have a drink without attacking others, just because some people do doesn't mean they all do.
EVERY smoker with a non smoker near by is affecting their health.

they would if alchohol directly affected the health of those around them that might no necessarily be drinking

No. Are they being taxed for it though?
No.
Where is the fairness John?

Not when they're under the influence of nicotine, though. They're people who'd attack people anyway. A lot of people are nice as pie when sober and complete badgers when drunk.

Maybe they should ban drinking thered be a lot less drink drivers and accidents on the roads.
Making it safer for everyone.
But what do they do instead extend opening hours

FFS, they're all outside now anyway. If you don't smoke, don't stand outside, you've won already.

But charging a smoker £10 for a smoking license doesn't change the effect on other people's health. Shoving them outside did, but this doesn't.

I need to walk through it to get in or out of any building now, I could go on arguing but then i'd just be being a badger.
Some drunk people do cause trouble yes, not every single one of them though, all smokers cause cancer.

Heroin and other drugs have a whole market of organised crime behind them.

You are saying people that smoke are getting a bum deal because they are addicted.
I'm asking why is it ok to be addicted to smoking but people who take other drugs are frowned upon.
Surely addiction is addiction?
