Mini update!

Quite alot done now and pretty much ready for first fire up.

Not had many pics off my Dad recently but seats went in today. I'm going down in a few weeks so i'll get loads of pics.

I love the seats though. Think they look the part. Also can see carbon fibre stone guards in 2nd pic too. Interior still needs finishing off with carpet etc. Paint/Harnesses etc etc going on after SVA/IVA.

Air filter on and bonnet in place. Air filter sits niceley inboard. Hole will be edged (for IVA) and meshed.

Bonnet catches were fitted this weekend. Had a few options but in the end had to go with the rubber covered ones to pass IVA.

Transmission tunnel carpet in place. Rest of interior carpet still to be fitted.

Front on view.

And the Chrysanthemum dust sheets have been replaced by the proper car cover!!

Update.

The build itself is pretty much done.

Ignore the awful wingmirrors. They are only on to pass IVA. Once passed, some smaller, sexier ones will be going on!

Indicators on. They are Yamaha ones. Bloody rip off! Pic was taken before they were lined up straight

Next stage is to get it off to the tuners to get the engine set up. Then IVA test. Once passed, some alterations will be made to improve it, which wouldnt have passed IVA, like the wing mirrors. Then off to bodyshop for paint, then suspension set up, corner weighted, engine tweaked on rollers, then the fun begins!

Car is fully built. It's been over to Specialist Components this week to have the engine set up and is currently at OBNS Motorsport having the suspension/tracking set up. It's been corner weighted and overall has weighed in at 550kg! (only 50kg more than a Caterham Superlight). We were expecting 700kg so are pretty happy. It's still got paint to go on though.

So performance wise we should be looking at about 350bhp per tonne when fully run in. Shit off a hot shovel :-)

IVA test will be booked for Jan, so fingers crossed. This will be the first Birkin to go through the new IVA test.

Will get latest pics up soon.

with the filter poistion arent you in a ideal situation to use longer trumpets, as the filter slightley outboard of the engibe cover will be less exposed to heat soak issues ?

Yes, could have used longer trumpets, but my Dad wanted it inboard so it looked "neater"

The guys at AT Power reckon it will make sod all difference to performance tho.

Car went on rollers today at APT Tuning http://www.ap-tuning.co.uk to have map fully tweeked by the guys from Specialist Components and emissions sorted as it was illegal.

Ran good figures. 181bhp/152lbft torque (330bhp per tonne). The guys were impressed with both sets of figures, especially torque.

Nope. Couple of bits to sort out. One being speedo only kicks in at 15mph for some reason. But now emissions sorted its very minor stuff then it's getting booked.

Place in Norwich. The car is at my parents in Norfolk so Norwich is the closest place. My Dad popped in to see the guy today to sound him out about a few things. Seems a decent guy so fingers crossed.

If the feedback is anything like when we took Ste's Robin Hood then even if it fails you'll have some good pointers for the retest.

Yep. Heard good and bad stuff about different test centres. Norwich has a good rep for being helpful etc. tho which is good. Ours is the first Birkin to go through IVA be because there hasn't been one built in UK since IVA came in.

Car ready for IVA on Thursday. Its finished but finished in "IVA Spec" and obviously isn't painted yet. It will be finished properly once we are through IVA.

Things like harnesses, smaller, sexier wing mirrors, hood, boot cover and wet weather gear fitted and checked, air filter bonnet hole meshed, paint etc etc.

IVA went great, we failed though but only on one thing. The wipers have to be 2 speed and ours are only single speed. That was it though!! Unfortunatley not something that could be sorted out there and then.

Not a biggie tho and from what my Dad says the guy was top notch!

Yep. Looks like the Birkin supplied wiper motor isn't designed to be 2 speed, so need to source a motor that is the same but 2 speed. Already checked caterham ones and they are completley different.

My Dad's emailed our contact at Birkin in SA to see if they know of an option.

Shame they failed it on something so stupid! Does it really make that much difference?

Pain in the ass! Looks great though!
