All this talk of drivers cars is well and good, except when you remember that a lot of people on the road just don't care about perfect handling or delivery. They want something that feels as if it is shifting quickly and returns decent fuel economy to boot.

Ok, so diesel might not be the perfect drivers car, but doesn't mean they can't be equally as performance oriented as petrol but with far better economy.

For normal everyday on the road power delivery I prefer modern turbo diesels as they have lots of low rev power/torque on hand. On a track obviously I'd go for a petrol.

Hate the power delivery on Diesels especially VAGs and they just are not flexible enought low down especially when sitting in traffic.

Only place they belong is on a motorway when the midrange can be used.

No John, just no. A Mazda is not a grandads car, as then you are saying that an RX7 is a grandads car. If you said a Mazda 3 TS2 (generally the diesel too), then yes, I'd agree with you. But how many Grandads do you know with an MPS? I know none. How many Grandads do I know with a diesel, oh, that's all of them.

Edit just noticed you said Asian, and there aren't even any Asians with one on the MPS forum Just picking a nationality out the hat I see to try and defend your shit argument.

Yeah you're always in the power band (in mine at least). It's great. Maybe it's just because I've been running a diesel for 3 years but I prefer the way they drive to petrols.

Most modern tractors don't put out any soot due to having a DPF nowadays. Mine doesn't kick a single bit out.

I love performance tractors, all the plus sides of a performance petrol (apart from the noise) but without the running costs. Quite often accelerate better than the petrol equivalent through the gears as well which makes them ideal for over taking. What's not to like about that

You have an Audi A3 don't you? Is it standard? I was referring more to Seats/Golfs etc I can imagine Audis are designed alot better, smoke out the back of a 30k car can't be good for business!

As I have mentioned, I'm not denying that there are quick diesels now, but I just don't think you can put them in the performance category. Quick yes, fun to drive, no way

Mines as quick as a Corsa VXR in a straight line and is decent on fuel, for that reason Im keeping it despite what CS says about diesels

i don't know what people class as performance cars now.

seems like any type/shape of car with a minimum of 150bhp cuts it with people

performance should mean more than a bit of pull from a turbo for a few thousand revs.

even grannies cars do 110-120mph these days

I don't get this either

How can being able to pull away in at least the first 3 gears not be flexible enough, you change gears less than in a petrol in traffic.

I rate my Mazda 6 Sport 2.2d highly.

No Smoke emission under throttle due to the DPF System

Just RR'd at Jamsport yesterday, standard and running on a blend of BP Ultimate and V-Power Diesel and some Dipetane fuel system cleaner stuff




It's fun to drive, and handles pretty well, but isn't a match on handling etc compared to my old Octavia vRS TDi - that was extremely chuckable - responsive through corners at pace with decent brakes

I never thought i'd rate Diesels until I got the Octavia - that, apart from a few mechanical issues i experienced, was a great car. I then upgraded to this Mazda at the start of the year

I still enjoy petrol cars, but if I was buying new again for daily use, i'd probably lean towards a higher performing diesel over a petrol car - and not for economy reasons - they are just much more driveable as they seem to pull better in gear making overtaking and DC/motorway driving so much easier

I think he mines they dont really like rolling in first gear, they just want to stop. Them second gear is slightly to long and you just judder about (at really slow speed)!

I do like diesels, but all the best engines, are still expensive (like the new 330d, 530d, 335d, the new mercedes e350 etc).

In years when they come down in price, i will have one, but for the minute ill stick with turbo petrol power!

I just knock it out of gear/stick my foot on the clutch when first is too low, I've never thought if I had a petrol here it would allow me to stay in this gear until the next set of lights.

They have plenty of pull but are boring to drive, I got a diesel to save money on my 1000 - 2000 miles per month

Its great for economy, but boring if you want to just go out for a "fun" drive!

Top Gear seemed to do alright with the 330d they used in the 24hr race.

Was still a diesel though.They couldve chose the equivilent petrol and done the same mods.
