there all much of a muchness, dont see the point in buying something personally that will be so so similar to what youve had before
They maybe all drive similar but its the looks i'm going for personally.
The problems I was having with the VXR just put me right off it, ojc said I should have fitted an LSD and that would have fixed the gearbox as well but at the end of the day paying out £1360 4 weeks after buying a 4 yr old car with only 32k miles was a right downer and I just didnt have the cash to buy the LSD as well, plus theres guys on vxronline who are on there 3rd/4th gearbox thats something I wasnt prepared to do.
It was needing new discs/pads in the next month or so, the 40k service, Tax, 2 new tyres so that lot was another £500+ whch the lad knew about and I just wasnt prepered to spend any more on it.

Instead hes going to get a Golf and the dash is going to setfire when one of the sensors get a bit hot and then the interior will get soaked when the rear wiper starts leaking water into the car and shorts out the rear lights.
It is probably a sidestep but its the looks i'm going for.
Never heard about the sensor problem (if thats just a wind up lol) and the rear wiper leaking willl be a hell of a lot cheap to fix than a new gearbox
The box on the VXR had a bit more than bearing problems, the diff pin was sheared, the clutch slave cylinder was goosed aswell as the bearings.

I fucking hammer my VXR on track and no issues so far, I reckon the issues stem from not fully depressing the clutch

I bought the car with the gearbox very notchy and the guy was pretty harsh with it on the test drive but I though it would be a £500 max fix when it did let go, I was very wrong.
Your box has been fully rebuilt as well mind when the LSD was fitted so it should handle the abuse.

I think you either get a good or a bad one to be honest. My CDTi was a great car when it was going but it had fault after fault. When each of those faults was a 1k+ fix and then 3k for the box it doesn't say a lot for the build quality.
In one year of ownership mine had new rear lights due to them not being sealed properly, new air con compressor because the bearings collapsed, new gearbox because the diff bearings went and when I traded it in the power steering pump bearings had started to go, there was a wheel bearing on its way out and the lights were leaking again. This is all on a car that when sold had only 24k miles on it.
I have a w plate corolla sr that we use as a second car and I swear it feels tighter and better built than the 2 year old astra did.

You lot must just buy shitters because I've had 2 Astra VXR's and 1 Corsa VXR and had 1 issue with the VXR and that was a split recirculation valve after it was mapped, replaced with a Forge one and no issues since.

My mate's had an Edition 30 on Stage 2 for a while now and had no issues. Uses it daily for going up and down motorways and says the fuel isn't too bad either. He has the DSG version which isn't too my taste but it's a very nice car to drive. People are saying they're all similar cars but I don't think they could be any different. The all look different and the interiors are completely different too. The ED30 is alot easier to make faster than a VXR. My standard MPS was neck and neck with a Stage 2 VXR...and he fully admitted he wasn't cutting any slack and is a very capable driver (before the excuses come tumbling in)
Just go test drive and buy what one you think looks best and drives best.

Is it a Regal stage 2 though? They don't all have 300bhp thanks to Regals magical rollers.

Pretty much sums it up Graham tbh
The thing is the Astra is one of the best sellers for Vauxhall as is the Golf for VW. So out of the sheer volume produced the reported stories about gearboxes or leaking rear wipers etc, surely these are in the minority out of the millions produced.
Not buying a car because of a "potential" minor fault which is quite rare is redicuous. This is further compounded by crap being spouted on a biased forum. Also if you buy private you know of the risks you are taking just make sure you have a contingency in place should you need it.
I'm sure Eck knows what he likes and having owned the VXR should in a good position to decide whether his next car is better or worse or overated.
