Why are all the news sites referring to this as 8000x bigger than the NZ quake?

The only thing I can think is the richter scale is exponential?

Larger concentration of people maybe Jules. Though I can't see it being 8000:1 from NZ to Japan.

NZ was a 6.3
JP 8.9

difference = 2.6
For every "1" up its 10x stronger but you count the first as 10 I think so...
so 10x10x10x6 = 6000 times stronger I get

Fucked up Journo mumbo jumbo if you ask me.

So an 8.9 can be 8000x 'stronger' than a 6.6?

If you work in 1000's of a 1 point in a 1 in 10 point perhaps

Thinking about it not even then ffs

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598

It's still 8000x stronger, and its on every site I read

Fucked up then.

Last time I went to A&E I was asked 'on a scale of one to ten how much does it hurt?'

I said close to a nine..

Next time, instead of replying 'close to a nine'...I'll say 8000x worse than a 6.6

Just read on sky news that they have had to release pressure in one of the reactors which means radioactive steam has been vented. They have evacuated thousands of people who live close by. It's not looking good this!
