They're not really dodgy pills from what I heard, just a lot stronger than they have been for the last 10 years.

Scare mongering by the media 
'Super Pills' as the media have called them have been available for almost 2 years now. Its like the whole plant food / MCAT carry on where a few folk die who are suspected to have taken it and the media jump all over it without proof.
I'd find it highly unlikely that someone like Winehouse who has taken copious amounts of all drugs would be killed by ecstasy as it is probably one of the safest drugs to take. She was probably back on the smack going by the performance or non performance at some gig the other month.
