So, excuse my ignorance here, if I follow those steps I can watch pretty much whatever tv programme or film on demand through my tv?
Quite tempted to get one of these for the spare room and get rid of my Sky multiroom sub.

Apart from purchasing programming through the iTunes store, it's purely a media streamer (with the exception that you have plugins for iPlayer/4OD/TVCatchup) which streams from other storage (NAS box, server etc).
Tbf i'm unsure why there is all the hype over the ATV2. I can see the point if you have other Apple hardware as you have access to Airplay, but as a standalone media streamer it's pretty shocking especailly as it's limited to 720p output (feel free for anyone to say otherwise, but i don't think it has chance since i was peeing around with it a few months back).
If you're just after streaming media then i'd go for a WDTV - cheaper and it outputs 1080p (can also get iPlayer if you have a TVersity etc server).

I have an iphone4 and was going to use this with skygo so I can still watch sky sports etc.
However I'm after a way to watch iplayer, 4OD and tv shows that I'm yet to see like breaking bad and other us shows on my tv rather than the pc. I don't currently watch any tv on the pc as it's not really practical.

If you want to stream then you could grab a US VPN and Hulu it using something like XBMC on the ATV2; but ideally you'd have a NAS box or similar, download your media (TV/Films) and stream them to the ATV2. But then again there are a handful of media streamers that are similar money and better than the ATV2.

Not 'hating', just stating facts. If it floats your boat then fair enough but as a media streamer it's pretty poor against other streamers that are cheaper and better (in terms of supported formats / functionality).
And as someone that pee'd around with an ATV2 for a few weeks, you're better off with Plex than XBMC.

Done Charlie sheens roast and all this seasons big bang theory (so far)
Surprised at the buffer time of the 720p versions too on my shite connection.
Not bothered with films yet, just looked through the extensive list
One thing tho, stuff is streamed via MU, and it makes you wait 45sec, can't youse a MU aCcount somehow to make it pack that in

From what i remember there was an option to enter your MU details on the Icefilms Config page under System Addons.

I might get the next one. I like the idea, I need 1080p though and it doesn't sound like it will play the files I download.
I've also got a better system going for tv and films than the plugins here.

USB (doubtful a usb port will ever happen) and 1080p and i'd be all over it. The ATV2 falls massively short though.
Russ - Can get Plex server for Windows/Linux as well.

Not epic, just have 1080p TV's and dl stuff in as high quality as I can, would be a waste only being able to display 720.

Admittedly I'm far from an AV expert but I've yet to be able to tell the difference between 720 and 1080. I have a 1080p 42" LCD and blu ray but can't see any noticeable improvement over Sky HD. There's certainly no chance I'd be able to tell which was which unless maybe they were side by side.

The annoying thing I found with Plex is that it still does not support the client/server model from what I can see i.e. I was running a "Plex Server" which I woulc expect the Plex running on my macbook to pick up but it doesn't. You had to re-add all the films locally again.
Apple TV is good, nice and easy and cheap but ATV2 is still a "Hobby" as Steve called it. I think the hardware is now at a point that the ATV3 could be a really nice little bit of kit when (if) its released.

It really depends on what it is your watching.
Alot of it is noticable and some of it isnt.
My personal rule of thumb is to download majority of my content (films/TV shows) in 720p and the blockbuster films in 1080p/blue ray.
You do notice the difference in the big budget films, iron man 2, transformers, tron legacy etc
In addition, I have a 52" TV, so I think its more noticable the more you have to scale up.
