They do say you are meant to seal / brown meat before putting it in. if we are doing a stew we just pan fry the steak in oil and flour.

i never bother personally. the flavour just goes all through the stew anyway so i wouldnt think you would lose any flavour overall

Never tastes any different,
I never part cook owt before hand either, made a few fails in the first place when I realised that the low setting is just for keeping it warm not cooking on mine lol!
