The masks were suggested when it was still thought that the flight deck had decompressed. Although he may have voluntarily put it on even though it wasn't required.

It's often the case that if a pilot leaves the cockpit the other pilot will wear the oxygen mask until they return.

I think all planes should have a remote pilot. Like a drone pilot does. Then he can override the plane no matter what happens.

Just asked my dad about that and he's never done this or heard of anyone doing it. And he's been a pilot for 36 years. They do have a always 2 people in the cockpit policy though.

Interesting, must admit I did hear it second hand, a friend of a friend is a United pilot, perhaps it varies between airlines/countries, bit like the 2 in the cockpit? Who does your dad fly for?

Also the amount of stuff that goes on in aviation, failures/problems/near misses etc that goes un reported is very high. Well at least not reported into the public domain.
