Have you got to have the business running a year before you apply to become VAT registered? Or just when you hit the bracket?

Ask Matt L he was helping me with it all yesterday
When the company takes more than 65k you do iirc. Or....if you dont then you can just fill in a tax form at the end of the year.

the second you go above or think you will go above 65k iirc, doesnt matter how long the company has been going.
ie you could register the day you set the company up or 7years later
